SLERS PiCA PiCA

LERS began as a personal culinary endeavor in 1969, when Fely Pelaez learned to prepare delicious smoked country ham in her home at Del Monte, Bukidnon. That year, family members and friends bought her ham for Noche Buena (Christmas dinner).
The ham eventually became popular. So, what started out as a small hobby became a cottage industry, and later a family corporation, selling also in Cagayan de Oro, and now in Manila. Despite its growth, SLERS continues to make fine quality foods the traditional way. SLERS products have a reputation for making special occasions even more special, and making any day a holiday.
Aside from producing quality foods, SLERS is also involved in food education. It is leading the industry in adopting food safety and quality assurance procedures in the Philippines. It is the first to provide the public with seminars and workshops to encourage personnel hygiene and safe food preparation.
The brand name SLERS is an acronym of the names of Fely's children.

Originally the pastel was only available in Camiguin, which was then produced by the Bollozo’s family. It was such in demand during their town fiestas, that one family member, Eleanor Jose-Popera, saw some business prospects in commercializing this native delicacy. In tandem with her husband, Ret. Lt. Col. Virgilio Jose who provided a small capital, they produced their first three boxes of pastel in1990. The fast growing demand for their products pushed them to look for financial assistance.   They were assisted by DOST and the current packaging and label design was also provided through the Packaging Research and Development Center of ITDI-DOST.  Amazing beginning! I experimented on some "yema thing" months ago.  You can try boiling an unopened can of condensed milk (I used Alaska).  You will come up with a yema and use this as a spread/filling to a pandesal, loaf, etc.  It works.  Of course, VJANDEP's will always be better. :p

Vjandep PAstel

Vjandep is the popular brand name of this delicious pastry. I don’t know if they’re the ones who invented it, but they certainly are the most popular. I have no idea how the Pastel came about, but what I do know it’s a small bun (similar to the usual dinner buns you get at steak restaurants), with a sweet custard filling. It’s best eaten at room temperature, the custard loses its creaminess a bit when refrigerated—best “thaw” it out first before eating if you had it stored in the fridge.
Pastel is also available here in Metro Manila, mostly in leading supermarkets and groceries. However, the price difference is incredible—I saw a half-dozen box selling for Php98 here. From Vjandep’s branch in Cagayan de Oro (which is near Camiguin where Vjandep Pastel originally came from), it’s less than Php60. A box of a dozen Pastel buns is only about Php115 there.
The price of Pastel here sucks, but hey, at least I’ll get to satisfy a Pastel craving when it arises—you just wait when our stock here runs out :P
